
| Philadelphia Phillies invite eight non-roster… | |
Scott Elarton, a 17-game winner with Houston in 2000 who hasn’t pitched in the majors in three years, was among eight non-roster players the Phillies have invited to spring training.
Elarton last pitched professionally in 2010 with Triple-A Charlotte. He’s 56-61 with a 5.29 ERA in 232 career games. Left-hander Pat Misch, who pitched in six games for the Mets last year; Raul Valdes, who appeared in 11 games with St. Louis and the Yankees last season; and right-hander Brian Sanches, who spent the last three seasons with Florida, also will report to spring training with Philadelphia. Infielders Pete Orr and Kevin Frandsen and outfielder Scott Podsednik are returning for a second year in the organization. Today, they signed veteran outfielder Scott Podsednik to a minor league deal with an invitation to Spring Training (via Ken Rosenthal’s twitter). After he was released by the Toronto Blue Jays from their Triple-A affiliate in Las Vegas, Podsednik was signed to a minor league deal by the Phillies in May, 2011. Podsednik hit .245 in 14 games with the Phillies’ Triple-A affiliate Lehigh Valley in 2011. Podsednik last played in the major leagues as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers where he finished the 2010 season. In 39 games for Los Angeles, he hit .262 with 1 home run, 7 RBI and 5 stolen bases. The 35-year-old has hit .279 for his MLB career with 41 home runs, 300 RBI and 301 stolen bases. PHILADELPHIA — Right-hander Scott Mathieson has been released by the Philadelphia Phillies, allowing him to sign with a team in Asia. The 27-year-old was 1-4 with a 6.75 ERA in eight starts and seven relief appearances with the Phillies in 2006, 2010 and this year. He didn’t allow a run in four relief outings this year. Mathieson also has a 32-37 record with a 3.75 ERA and 34 saves in 96 starts and 104 relief appearances in the minor leagues. The move was announced Tuesday. What do you guys think about this. According to a report by ESPN’s Jayson Stark, the Philadelphia Phillies have signed infielder Kevin Frandsen and pitcher Pat Misch to minor-league deals today.
The Phillies also announced the team has released pitcher Scott Mathieson. Frandsen, 29, hit .303 with four home runs and 40 RBIs in 77 games with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs last season. He was suspended 50 games for violation of Minor League Baseball’s Drug Policy after testing positive for Ritalin. Misch, a 29-year-old left-hander, went 8-9 with a 4.00 ERA in 22 starts with Triple-A Buffalo last season. Mathieson, 27, was 2-2 with a 3.28 ERA in 30 games (12 starts) with the IronPigs last season. According to phillies.com, the righty, who was a combined 1-4 with a 6.75 ERA in 15 games over three years with the Phillies, is pursuing opportunities in Asia.
